This article is beautifully in depth, chronicling the changes in how artists approached color. It was very informative of the relationship of painters using color and sculptor with the ready-made. The part about color starting to work “indexically rather than symbolically or iconographically or expressively” was particularly interesting. Fer spoke more about how the color was used and applied, rather than how color relationships changed. For example speaking about a mark of color being only a spot by the late 60s instead of needing a huge gesture of a mark. I appreciated the explanation of many of these works of art. The explanation of “Stains” by Ed Ruscha was informative because I thought that work had more to do with the how messy and sloppy people naturally are. I didn’t realize that it was primarily about the colors, and about not having any emotional or decorative ties to these colors. Overall, this article helped to better articulate works of art that were a little unclear to me.
So when I was looking at better pictures of these works while reading about them, I happened upon a show that just took place at Tate Liverpool caller “Color Chart: Reinventing Colour 1950’s to Today”. I thought it was a nice coincidence.
